Misal Pav step by step
- Add sprouted Moth beans,1/4 teaspoon turmeric, salt, 2 cups water, potatoes to pressure cooker and mix well.
- Pressure cook for 2-3 whistles over medium heat and keep it aside.
- Heat 2 teaspoon oil in a pan and add ginger garlic paste.
- Saute until raw aroma disappears.
- Add 1 medium chopped onion, saute until light brown.
- Add dry coconut and saute for 1 minutes.
- Add tomatoes and saute until soft and mushy.
- Allow the mixture to cool completely.
- Transfer mixture to grinder and add 1/4 cup water. Grind to smooth paste and keep it aside.
- Heat 3 tbsp oil in a pan. Splutter cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Add curry leaves and saute for 30 seconds.
- Add all spice powders and mix well.
- Saute for 1-2 minutes.
- Add ground paste and saute for 4-5 minutes.
- Add tamarind pulp and mix well.
- Add cooked moth beans mixture along with water.
- Add salt and jaggery.
- Mix well, add additional water if required.
- Bring mixture to boil.
- Simmer, cover and cook for 10 minutes.
- To assemble: Transfer cooked Moth beans mixture to serving bowls.
- Top with finely chopped onions and tomatoes.
- Top up with finely chopped coriander leaves and squeeze lemon juice on top.
- Top with Farsan. Serve hot with Toasted pav.
Misal Pav is prepared with few variations in different places in Maharashtra like Puneri Misal, Kolhapuri Misal etc. Though I have not tasted all the versions but I would love to try them when I visit those. Misal pav is readily available in the market and we often prefer to eat it outside or order a parcel. This time I preferred to make it at home and my efforts were rewarded.
